This Natural Hair Journey of mine has been a roller coaster of many emotions. Along the way I realized that part of the reason why I had embarked on this journey, had set me up for failure. I constantly questioned, if my hair is not curly or coily is it still considered natural?
My journey was motivated by two things: 1 – I wanted to embrace and love my own natural hair and 2 – I wanted curly hair. Initially when I embarked on this journey, I watched alot of YouTube vidoes. I desperately wanted to learn some tips and tricks to getting my hair at the level of curly that I wanted.
The type of videos I watched were mostly curly hair blogger/influencer videos. They were deep into their natural hair journey’s so the condition of their hair was amazing.
I learn’t quite alot from them and honestly, I don’t think I would have known how to properly care for my hair in these past 3 months had I not watched those videos.
If my hair is not curly or coily is it still considered natural
I went in to a bit of a slump. I was wearing my hair naturally and following all the tips and tricks I had learned but my hair was not anywhere near where I wanted it to be. No matter what I did, it wasn’t curly and it wasn’t springing from my root.
Although I knew I had to be patient and shouldn’t expect any change
overnight, it weighed heavily on me and i felt like my hair would never evolve to where I want to be. It constantly left me wondering, if my hair is not curly or coily is it still considered naturall?
You see, somewhere along the line I got confused by the term natural hair. I thought that natural hair referred to curly and coily hair. But that can’t be right. It defeats the purpose of me embracing my natural hair, because what if my natural hair is not curly or coily?
So I changed my perspective and rewired my thinking a little. I remembered why I began this journey in the first place. And one of the most important reasons for embarking on this Natural Hair Journey, was to embrace my hair for what it is. To know and believe and accept that my hair is beautiful no matter what. That I need not use a flat iron to make it look “right” and “acceptable”. My hair is already “right” and “acceptable”, curls or no curls.
Time passed by and I lost my impatience. I started caring more for my hair and was less concerned about the curls. The result was that my curls started popping a whole lot during this time, naturally, and in its own way. I’m super chuffed because its evolved into more than what I could have hoped for.
Natural hair is Natural hair
If my hair is not curly or coily is it still considered natural ? Yes it is still considered natural. Because wearing your hair in it’s natural form whether curly or not, is natural.
