Getting my kids to eat super healthy food, has been an on going learning process for me. As a full time working mom of two, it is not always possible because lets be honest, the not-so healthy food is always the quickest to make. And the last thing you want to hear when you get home after a long day of work, is a hungry nagging child(ren). So you whip up whatever you can in speedy time so that everyone is happy. Fry’s Family have helped turn this situation around for us. Theres alot of healthy snacking and eating going on in our home lately. Just as we did, you too can learn how to get your kids to make their own SuperFood and eat it!
I’ve been doing alot of planning lately and I must admit, I’ve seen alot of change in my life. I don’t feel as rushed and I’m no longer late for various meetings and appointments as I used to. I promise that I’ll write about this and how I’ve tackled it, soon so do keep an eye on the motherhood category. But in the topic of planning, I had planned to try out some of the SuperFood we received from Fry’s Family to try, last Sunday.
Fry’s sent us a SuperFood for SuperKids starter kit. I had planned to go to the grocery store and purchase whatever ingredients I needed that Sunday morning, and then get stuck into it with Liam. But, it rained and it rained some more. And our entire road was flooded. As a result, were stuck at home. We didn’t have all the ingredients we needed but were still able to whip up SuperFood nevertheless. We are thankful for the rain, just not so thankful for our drains that keep getting blocked.
About Fry’s Family
The original idea behind Fry’s was to find a way to make nutritious products for our family who are all passionate about plant-based diets. Back when we started in 1991 most people thought we were crazy. “Plants that look and taste like meat, made in your kitchen!?” Okay, maybe we were crazy, but with passion and determination, great things can happen. Now, a few decades on, the fully fledged second generation family business, a larger family (and a few grandchildren), we wanted to bring you some more amazingly good tasting plant-based foods, which will leave you feeling good!
Fry’s aims to provide a healthy alternative for you and your family. Their products are so easy to cook and you can find them at almost every major food outlet in South Africa. If you’re still uncertain, visit their home page, and navigate to the “Where to buy” page which lists all the various outlets that stock Fry’s foods. Even restaurants! Eating out has never been easier! Fry’s uses ‘only the finest quality ingredients sourced from plants and completely vegan (they don’t do meat, egg or dairy)’. With Fry’s food, you can eat tasty stuff that is good for you and the planet.
How to get your kids to make their own SuperFood and eat it
As mentioned earlier, Fry’s sent us a SuperFood for SuperKids starter kit which contained some of their frozen food products (gluten free, did I mention GLUTEN FREE), the apron and chefs hat that Liam is wearing, a dinner plate with reference to daily dietary requirements and a recipe book. The recipe book contains some lovely ideas for kids to prepare super cool meals and snacks, with your supervision of course. You can download your free copy on their website. Be warned though, there are a number of free recipe e-books available to download! I love that the recipes are uncomplicated and do not require a large number of ingredients. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen!
Those are some of the ingredients we used. Not having all the ingredients did not mean a less healthy meal for my kids though, since Fry’s foods are already packed with all the healthy stuff needed. It also lead to Liam using his imagination just a little more! “Mommy I’m a REAL Chef now!” said Liam excitedly, at least twenty five times! I’m over exaggerating a little, but he said it quite a few times. He was so excited to prepare his own food, even more so for his little brother. It gave him a sense of responsibility and achievement. On the flip side, I was bursting with joy to watch my child eat SuperFood! It was a win-win!
Our timing was perfect. We did everything while Cole (almost 2 years old) was asleep. and he woke up just in time to eat. Just for a bit of background, Liam, eats well. He generally will eat whatever you have made for him. Cole, doesn’t eat so well. He usually goes for all the meat and chicken and will only eat the rest if he is really hungry. So he doesn’t always get in the good stuff. This time around though, he ate everything in his plate. It was clear to see that he enjoyed it because he kept coming back for more!
First off Liam put together a ‘Secret Garden’ as seen in the picture below
He was tempted to eat this one alone. I’ll admit, he didn’t want to share. but eventually he gave in and shared with his brother Cole. Cole first attacked the Fry’s Falafels. He had about 3 of those, only because he was distracted by the food in the next picture ha! He ate the Falafels with the tamotoes. I’ve never seen Cole devour tomatoes like that before. He’d never usually eat any tomatoes in his plate.
Second up was The Garden Patch with Backyard Bugs
As I mentioned before, Liam has always been a dream to cook for. Simply because he eats whatever you give him, and he enjoys it. But we struggle with Cole. This time around though, he everything in his plate. I wish I had snapped some pictures to show you, but it all happened so fast!
Last up was a ‘Flower bed’
Liam made this with the last of the ingredients. We didn’t know what it is actually. Liam just said that we’ll call it a flower bed, so we went with it, ha! These have got to be the best butternut balls I’ve tasted. (Well, the only butternut balls I’ve tasted) They were Coles favourite too. I think he may have initially thought its chicken pops, so his face changed a little when he took the first bite. But then he quickly continued eating, he loved it!
It was an easy process to put together
The falafels, butternut balls and nuggets went in the oven for 15 minutes. I then diced up a few veg and then left the rest to my son. It is an uncomplicated and quick process. And at the end of it, my kids tummies were filled with all of the good stuff!
Have you tried out any of the Fry’s Family Food, or better yet, when will you be trying it out?
